Invited Speakers
Mr. Guirish Solanki is a Consultant Paediatric Neurosurgeon at the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Birmingham, affiliated to the School of Clinical & Experimental Medicine, University of Birmingham. Mr Solanki is a keen educator and is Director for Birmingham Children’s Hospital Neurosurgery Training Programme over the past 14 years. He is also actively involved in Regional Training and is the Neurosurgery Training Programme Director and the Chair of the West Midlands Speciality Training Committee for Neurosurgery. Mr Solanki is also faculty for the Courses by the European Society of Paediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN), International Society of Pediatric Neurosurgery (ISPN) and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Paediatric neurosurgery section. He also developed and implemented the Combined Paediatric Neuro-oncology Training and Education for the SIOP-Europe Bain Tumour Group including the harmonization of a European wide curriculum. Mr Solanki’s international commitment includes service to several societies keen on training, education and research activities for paediatric neurosurgeons. He is the past neurosurgery co-chair of SIOP-Europe Brain Tumour Group (BTG) a position he held between2010-2014. He is currently the chair of SIOP-Europe BTG’s Training & Education Group (TEG) since its formation in 2012, Chair of the Liaison Committee of the ISPN since 2014, member of the ISPN Education Committee, past chair (2010-2014) and current member of the Liaison Committee of the ESPN and member of the WFNS Paediatric Neurosurgery Committee since 2009 and Chair of the organising Committee of the 47th ISPN Annual Meeting in Birmingham in 2019. Besides education, his main clinical and research interests include Neuro-oncology, Craniofacial surgery, Complex Spine Surgery including cranio-vertebral junction, Hydrocephalus, Moya-Moya, Inborn errors of metabolism and Congenital conditions including Dysraphism. |

Pierre Mertens is psychotherapist and artist. In both functions he concentrates on social aspects of minorities. As psychotherapist he focuses on patients with chronicle pain and youth with severe psychiatric deficits. As artists he developed art projects with patients with Alzheimer diseases, on the German T4 program, on and with homeless people, with disadvantage Children, immigrant women, children with disabilities, etc…
Liesje, Pierre Mertens’ first child, was born with Spina Bifida and hydrocephalus in 1978. Confronted with the lack of information for parents, he started the Belgian Association for Spina Bifida the following year. He and his wife got two more children and fostered a 4th child. Pierre Mertens joined the board of ‘IF’ the worldwide umbrella organization for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus in 1987 (www.ifglobal.org). When Liesje died unexpectedly at the age of 11 after a medical error in judgment, he continued his work internationally. He and his wife fostered more children in their family, two with Down syndrome. The second one is now 27 years old and still living with them.
In 2001 he decided to share her story with the world and wrote “Liesje’, searching for words for the birth and death of a special child”. This book is now available in 8 languages. In 1995, IF elected him as President of the International Federation for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus. Pierre Mertens started a program for International Solidarity between persons with a disability in the Global North with their peers in the Global South. This program provided neurosurgical interventions and follow-up care to more than 50 000 children with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus in East Africa. In 2004 he started the division IF-Child-Help to answer he increasing demands of children in developing countries. In 2006 Child-Help became a separate organization with chapters in Belgium, Germany, France, Italy and The Netherlands. In 2009 het wrote ‘daddy what is a handicap’ to explain to children and adults all aspects of disability and inclusion. Pierre Mertens collaborates with all partners, local and international that wants to join his efforts. In his last years of president he lobbied to the Chinese government to create a working group on Spina Bifida with CDPF, the Chinese Disability organization. He and his board created PUSH ‘people united for spina bifida and hydrocephalus. In 2012 he gave over presidency of IF. IF nominated him as Global Ambassador of IF.
As director of Child-Help International he now focuses only on children with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in developing countries and primary prevention. In 2016 the different Child-Help countries created Child-Help International to bring all efforts together to answer as much as possible the needs of the more than 500 000 newborns with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus worldwide.
Child-Help is now active in all parts of the world, providing training and care at all levels, and facilitating parent support groups connected to all programs.
